A GREAT IROKO FALLS: SPERA-IN-DEO TRANSITIONS, LEAVING A LEGACY OF EBONYI HOSPITALITY

The red earth of Abakaliki heavily mourns the passing of HRH, Igwe Alphonsus Okpalaechelu (Spera-in-deo), the traditional ruler of Adazi Enu, Anambra State. He was more than a businessman; he became a monument. Today, Ebonyi’s iconic flyover stands where his vision took root, proving that our soil nurtures the dreams of strangers into towering landmarks.

Walk through Abakaliki—our streets and markets are filled with the footprints of Ndi-Anambra who thrived because Ebonyi is a mother with an open womb. We gave land, trust, and brotherhood without discrimination.

But as we honor this giant, we must look into the mirror. Why does the river of hospitality flow in only one direction?

Too many Ebonyians in Anambra face thorny roads—denied apartments, stereotyped in workplaces, and treated like outsiders. We still remember when the lonely Abakaliki Street in Awka was almost stripped of its name.

Is the blood of an Ebonyian water, while others drink wine? Brotherhood cannot be a one-way street. If Ebonyi can elevate an Anambra son until his name defines our geography, then Ebonyians deserve equal dignity, respect, and acceptance across the Southeast.

This is not a war drum, but a call for mutual respect. Let the walls of prejudice crumble.

Adieu, Igwe Okpalaechelu. Your physical presence is gone, but your name is forever etched into the soul of Ebonyi.

Rest in peace, Spera-in-deo.
